Bronchoscope and Nasopharyngoscope

The bronchoscope and nasopharyngscope attachments for the CMAC both require high level disinfection after each use. That is done in “outpatient services.” The process is as follows:

  1. Place the used scope in a green bag (picutre below) and put a patient’s sticker on the bag.
  2. Someone from the ED (tech, nurse, HUC, doctor, etc) needs to take it to outpatient services and drop it off.
  3. Outpatient services is located off the hallway between the CCU waiting room and entrance to the CCU (video below).
  4. Once you enter the double doors into the outpatient services area, there is a set of doors to the right that leads to the “scope rooms.”
  5. The cleaning room is located between to rooms labeled “Scope Room A” and “Scope Room B,” but there is no hallway entrance to the cleaning room.
  6. Until ~ 3 in the afternoon, there should be someone in the hallway that you can leave the scope with who will take it to the cleaning room. (You likely won’t go into the scope rooms as they will probably be in use for patient care.)
  7. The cleaning process takes less than an hour.
  8. When the scope is clean, the person who has cleaned it will call back to the ED.
  9. Someone from the ED will retrieve the scope and place it back on it’s cart in ED room 1. It is not the outpatient staff’s responsibility to bring it back to the ED.
  10. There is only someone to clean the scope during the week until about 3 pm. We use the scopes so infrequently that it is unlikely that you would need it cleaned urgently overnight or on a weekend; and if this need should arise – you are probably just out of luck.
